Central City Citizens are getting results!
Central Cit Citizens is a group of 300 residents in Toledo’s Central City dedicated to improving neighborhood conditions and providing residents with safe a living environment. Since 2010, the group has focused its efforts on issues impacting neighborhood crime and safety, including vacant properties, illegal dumping, and poor street lighting. Through its community organizing efforts, the group has been successful in getting street lights repaired, numerous houses boarded up, vacant properties and alleys cleaned up and 10 abandoned houses demolished. CCC has also done an assessment of vacant homes, identifying more than 130 vacant and blighted homes that pose a health and safety risk to the community. In cooperation with the Lucas county Land Bank and Treasurer Wade Kapszukiewicz, all of the homes will be demolished using funds designated by the Ohio Attorney General from the national foreclosure settlement.
In addition to these victories, CCC members have presented their concerns regarding crime and vacant properties to various city officials and departments, including the mayor of Toledo, Toledo City Council, and the Toledo Police Department. As a result, CCC now meets regularly with the City of Toledo’s Department of Neighborhoods, Department of Inspection, and City Council.
Through all these efforts, CCC has succeeded in establishing partnerships with a variety of community organizations in the greater Toledo area, including the Ella P. Stewart Academy for Girls, Family House Homeless Shelter, and the Frederick Douglass Community Association where the Toledo ESOPs office is now housed. CCC is committed to using these relationships to continue producing positive change in Toledo’s Central City Neighborhoods. The group continues working toward improving neighborhood conditions and providing families with a safe living environment. As Mr. Tracy Rhoades, local resident and leader of CCC states, “the most important thing is the safety of our children.”
